Freedom
I believe that the world could be paradise if people only changed their minds. Modern life gives people the wrong idea about what the world is and leads them astray down a path of unhappiness, unfulfillment and disease. Human beings have had their critical thinking bred out of them, or rather, their strength of mind never exercised, never develops. Instead, lazy, convenient and "in the moment" emotional thinking take over and become the guiding forces in most people.
What separates us from animals in the first place is the ability to act contrary to the desires of our bodies. This is how we are able to be "good people". Doing the right thing rather than the convenient thing is basically the core of every religion and philosophy. To think critically is also to plan for the future. It is to do without today in order to do with tomorrow.
Today, most people live a life of mindless consumption never setting down roots or committing to anything concrete because they know it means immediate inconvenience (which is another way of saying unfulfilled desire). This is a weakness that at base lowers us to the level of animals which always choose the laziest and most convenient option at the expense of their wellbeing or the world around them.
This regression into an animalistic state paradoxically, for Man, causes estrangement from Nature rather than a return to it. In our natural state, and in order to be in harmony, we must put ourselves second. This applies not only to other human beings but also to the animals, plants and world around us. However, this is very different from the societal pressures to conform to the group by denying individuality and differences through submission.
This groupthink is a form of slavery where one exercises no strength of mind and is instead led through life by some collective idea where all important decisions are made for you. At the pinnacle of this false selflessness is the group and every part of it must necessarily suffer in order to maintain the status-quo and ensure its survival. There is no thought as to right and wrong here, only preservation. And people put up with it because in exchange for their submission and loss of self, their every whim, fancy and pleasure is stroked.
What I am talking about on the other hand is a true selflessness where one must retain their individuality, exercise strength of will and where at the pinnacle, is a higher idea of goodness rather than a few human beings. There is no submission and no reward for playing. Only the simple idea that by doing what is right, that is to say, acting in harmony or restoring balance, tomorrow will be better. To truly embody and live this idea is to as an individual, go against the group if the group is doing wrong. This is where the true power of the human being comes forth and where one voice or one act can change the minds of millions.
Weak people cling to groups because they lack the strength of mind to live for themselves and the group gobbles them up. The group offers protection at the cost of compliance. Strong people stand alone, navigate life using their own judgement and live real self sacrifice, not for bodily pleasure, but for a better tomorrow.
There is a saying I think about often which goes something like this: "You can tell what a society values by looking at its buildings". This could be said to be a more modern incarnation of Jesus' "You can know a tree by its fruit". Even taken literally and without further thought, the buildings of our time are clearly ugly, anti-human and making us sick. Our society puts quick and cheap mass production, in effect money and profit, over what is right. Our buildings are not built to last and serve only to solve immediate and short term problems, and this is by design. The way we build is based solely on money rather than any higher human ideals. We knowingly do harm.
Think a little deeper about this and apply it to the creations, products and results of all mechanisms of this society and ask this question: Is our society creating anything good? Have we not created a world that is actively hostile and anti-human? Every creation not only has a creator but a reason for being, an underlying value system or philosophy. Trace the products of our society back to their origins and look at why they were created.
We are rotten to the core but it'd make more sense to say: The rot began hidden away at our core and has spread and grown so large it is now made manifest in our buildings and our fruit. To fix this sorry situation there is no need for societal upheaval or governmental change. People need simply to cultivate strength of will, become virtuous and take charge of their lives. If each individual healed themselves, the world would in turn be healed. I'm not saying this is easy, far from it, but it is necessary if tomorrow is to be better than today.
To "fight" evil is to do evil and in the end nothing is accomplished. Here's the thing though, the problem is not evil itself, the problem is unbalance or disharmony. This is not a battle of duality between the forces of good and evil. Evil can not be conquered by war, evil can only be reduced by a net increase in good which is to say: the restoration of balance and harmony.
This weakness of mind and submission to the group is what I believe is the primary cause of the death of the family and the downward spiral in fertility rates worldwide. Having children is one act of the true selflessness I describe above and people are refusing to do it because they are too weak. Instead of creating families and becoming independent, strong adults and virtuous role models to their children, people are staying children, remaining childless and refusing to grow up. The group performs the role of parent having all responsibility and the child freely indulges their desires, plays games and throws emotional tantrums from the safety of its bosom.
This world could be a paradise but we have turned it into a prison and a living hell. The saddest part of all is that this prison is an imaginary one of our own making and has no walls or guards. Nothing is stopping us from leaving at anytime. We willingly remain inside it. But in this is a silver lining. We need only walk away and the prison disappears and we become free.
